Airalo eSIM Japan Review: Plans, Unlimited Data, Networks, Hotspot Use, and Drawbacks
Airalo is one of the best-known eSIM services for international travelers.
For Japan, Airalo currently lists KDDI and SoftBank as supported networks. It offers both fixed-data and unlimited plans, with top-ups available on eligible packages and hotspot support.
Airalo does not have one single standout feature as obvious as Saily’s security tools or Ubigi’s KDDI + NTT Docomo network combination. That is not necessarily a weakness.
Airalo’s biggest strength is its overall flexibility: it gives travelers a wide range of plans for different trip styles.
For a short Japan-only trip, you can choose a fixed-data plan. Heavy users can consider unlimited data. If Japan is only one stop on a multi-country itinerary, Airalo also offers regional and global options.
Project Torii rates Airalo as a Strong Choice 🟢 because it combines broad plan choice with relatively few major weaknesses.
There are still trade-offs. Japan local plans are primarily data-only, so they do not give you a Japanese phone number or standard cellular calls and SMS. And “unlimited” does not mean unlimited full-speed data.
This review separates Airalo’s official product information, evidence about the underlying Japanese networks, and practical implications for travelers so you can decide whether Airalo actually fits your trip—not simply choose it because it is well known.

1. Quick Verdict — Is Airalo Good for Japan?
Project Torii Quick Verdict
Travel Match: 🟢 Strong Choice
Airalo is less of a one-feature specialist and more of a well-rounded eSIM with relatively few major weaknesses for most travelers.
It is particularly easy to recommend if you:
are using an eSIM in Japan for the first time
are visiting Japan for around one to two weeks
expect to use Google Maps and translation apps frequently
use social media while traveling
want several data allowances to choose from
want to compare fixed-data and unlimited plans
may tether a laptop or tablet
want the option to top up if you run low
also travel outside Japan
would rather keep using one eSIM service than research a new provider for every trip
Airalo’s official Japan information currently lists KDDI and SoftBank as supported networks.
Main advantages
KDDI + SoftBank access in Japan
several fixed-data options
unlimited plans available
personal hotspot supported on unlimited plans
Airalo does not impose a separate tethering-data or device-count cap on unlimited packages
top-ups available on eligible packages
local, regional, and global options
Airalo serves more than 200 destinations overall
Main drawbacks
Japan local plans are data-only
no Japanese phone number
no standard cellular voice calls or SMS on the local data plan
unlimited data is not unlimited full-speed data
travelers who specifically want NTT Docomo access should also compare Ubigi
fewer distinctive extras than Saily’s security features
the number of plan choices can be confusing at first
real-world performance still varies with location, congestion, device, and roaming configuration
Airalo earns its Strong Choice rating not because it dominates one category, but because its mix of pricing, data allowances, unlimited options, hotspot support, top-ups, network access, and multi-country flexibility makes it a practical candidate for a wide range of travelers.
2. Airalo in 30 Seconds — Key Facts
| Feature | Airalo Japan |
|---|---|
| Type | Travel eSIM |
| Japan local eSIM | Yes |
| Networks in Japan | KDDI / SoftBank |
| Fixed-data plans | Yes |
| Unlimited plans | Yes |
| Unlimited high-speed allowance | Default FUP: 3 GB per 24 hours* |
| After the allowance | Up to 1 Mbps* |
| Hotspot / tethering | Supported |
| Separate tethering cap on unlimited | None imposed by Airalo |
| Japanese phone number | Not included with the local plan |
| Standard voice calls | Not included with the local data plan |
| SMS | Not included with the local data plan |
| WhatsApp / LINE etc. | Yes, over data |
| Top-ups | Available on eligible packages |
| Regional eSIMs | Yes |
| Global eSIMs | Yes |
| Airalo’s overall coverage | 200+ destinations |
* Airalo’s default unlimited Fair Use Policy is 3 GB per 24 hours. If a specific package lists a different high-speed threshold, the package details take precedence.
Airalo is not just a Japan-only eSIM service. For a Japan-only trip, a local plan is usually the simplest place to start. For Japan plus countries such as South Korea or Taiwan, a regional plan may make more sense. For a trip spanning several regions, a global plan may be worth comparing.
If you expect to keep traveling internationally after Japan, having all three options inside the same Airalo ecosystem is a genuine convenience.

3. Airalo Japan Pricing
Airalo offers a relatively broad selection of data allowances and validity periods for Japan.
Fixed-data plans
As of the August 11, 2026 evidence check, Airalo’s official Japan content showed fixed-data options including 1 GB, 2 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, and 20 GB. Pricing can vary by display region, currency, promotion, and checkout view, so treat the figures below as reference prices rather than permanent rates.
| Data | Typical validity | Reference price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | about US$4.00–4.50 |
| 2 GB | 15 days | about US$6.00–7.00 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | about US$7.50–8.50 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | about US$10.50–11.00 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | about US$17.50–18.00 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | about US$24.00–26.00 |
Airalo’s Japan store was showing plans from US$4.00 during this review, while Project Torii’s Pillar uses US$18 for the 10 GB / 30-day plan as its comparison reference. Prices and available validity periods can change, so always check the final package details and checkout price before buying.
Unlimited plans
Airalo also offers Japan unlimited plans with several validity periods. During this evidence check, the official store showed the following prices:
| Validity | Price seen during review |
|---|---|
| 3 days | US$11.50 |
| 5 days | US$17.00 |
| 7 days | US$27.00 |
| 10 days | US$34.50 |
| 15 days | US$48.00–49.00 |
| 30 days | US$69.00 |
Plan availability, promotional pricing, and package durations can change. Check the package details at the time of purchase.
4. Which Plan Should You Choose?
Project Torii uses the following as a practical starting point for typical mobile-data needs in Japan:
| Trip length | Typical planning range |
|---|---|
| 5 days | about 3 GB |
| 7 days | about 5 GB |
| 10 days | 5–10 GB |
| 14 days | about 10 GB |
| 21 days | 10–20 GB |
→ How much data do you need for Japan?
These estimates assume a typical traveler who uses hotel Wi-Fi at night and relies on mobile data outside for Maps, translation, web searches, messaging, and social media.
Around 5 days
If you mainly use Maps, translation, and messaging, around 3 GB can be enough. If you use social media frequently, 5 GB gives you more breathing room.
Around 7 days
Project Torii would generally start around 5 GB. For travelers who do not stream much video, that is a comfortable allowance.
10–14 days
10 GB is the easiest default choice. It gives most travelers room for Maps, translation, searches, Instagram, and everyday browsing without constantly watching the data meter.
Two to three weeks or longer
Compare 10 GB and 20 GB. If you use more social media, video, or tethering, 20 GB gives you a better buffer.
Heavy users
watch a lot of TikTok, Reels, or YouTube
tether a laptop
rarely use hotel Wi-Fi
need data for work
do not want to keep checking remaining data
If that sounds like you, an unlimited plan may be worth the extra cost. Just remember that unlimited does not mean unlimited high-speed data.
5. Is Airalo Unlimited Really Unlimited?
Airalo’s unlimited packages do not have a fixed total data cap, but they are subject to a Fair Use Policy.
Airalo’s default policy gives you 3 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour period. After that, speeds are reduced to up to 1 Mbps for the rest of that 24-hour cycle. The allowance resets every 24 hours from the time the eSIM is activated.
Airalo also states that a particular package may use a different threshold. If it does, that threshold should be shown in the package details before purchase. Always check the specific Japan unlimited package you are buying.
What can you do at 1 Mbps?
Airalo says 1 Mbps is still usable for messaging, simple web pages, Maps, and lower-quality video calls. Data-heavy activities such as video streaming, gaming, and large downloads will feel much slower.
How does that compare with other unlimited plans?
| Provider | High-speed allowance | After allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Saily | 5 GB / 24 hours | up to 1 Mbps |
| Airalo | default 3 GB / 24 hours* | up to 1 Mbps* |
| Nomad | 2 GB / 24 hours | 512 kbps |
* Airalo’s figures are the default FUP. A package-specific threshold takes precedence if one is listed.
On daily high-speed allowance alone, Saily is more generous. Airalo gives you more than Nomad, while also allowing personal hotspot use without a separate small tethering allowance imposed by Airalo.
6. Airalo’s Biggest Strength — Choice and Overall Flexibility
This is the key to understanding Airalo.
Airalo is not necessarily the cheapest option, the strongest network option, or the provider with the largest unlimited high-speed allowance.
Its biggest strength is how many different trip profiles it can accommodate.
Within Japan, you can choose between fixed-data and unlimited plans. If your itinerary extends beyond Japan, you can move from local to regional or global options without leaving the Airalo ecosystem.
Five days in Tokyo → Japan local fixed-data plan
Ten days in Japan with heavy video use → Japan unlimited plan
Japan + South Korea + Taiwan → compare an Asia regional plan
Japan + the U.S. + Europe → compare a global plan
Airalo offers local, regional, and global eSIMs across more than 200 destinations overall. That does not mean one global package covers 200+ countries: the countries included in a global package depend on the specific product.
An all-rounder, not a one-feature specialist
If coverage is your top priority → also compare Ubigi for NTT Docomo access
If price per GB and larger fixed-data allowances matter most → Nomad may be attractive
If security features matter → Saily stands out
If your priority is smartphone-first unlimited data → Holafly is also worth comparing
Airalo’s appeal is that it remains competitive across most of the categories that matter to travelers. That balance is why Project Torii rates it as a Strong Choice.
7. Which Networks Does Airalo Use in Japan?
Airalo’s official Japan information currently lists KDDI and SoftBank as supported networks.
In Project Torii’s traveler-focused network guide, we broadly characterize NTT Docomo for coverage, KDDI / au for reliability and consistency, and SoftBank for download speed and strong urban performance.
→ Docomo vs au vs SoftBank in Japan
KDDI + SoftBank is a solid combination for many Japan itineraries, particularly trips centered on major cities.
That does not mean your phone combines both networks at the same time. It connects to one available network at a time. Nor should you assume that an Airalo user will always receive exactly the same speed or network priority as a direct KDDI or SoftBank subscriber.
In major cities, do not over-focus on the network name
For trips centered on Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Yokohama, Nagoya, and other major urban areas, pricing, data allowance, unlimited terms, hotspot support, and ease of use may matter just as much as the network name.
Network choice matters more in rural areas
If your itinerary includes mountains, remote areas, or extensive rural travel, it is worth comparing an eSIM that also offers access to NTT Docomo.
→ Compare Airalo vs Ubigi for Japan
8. Speed, 4G / 5G, and Connection Quality
Project Torii treats this section cautiously.
Airalo offers 5G-capable eSIMs in some destinations, but not every Airalo eSIM is necessarily 5G-enabled. Airalo’s own guidance says 5G availability depends on the eSIM and coverage and should be checked in the package details.
For this review, we did not find sufficiently consistent first-party evidence to make a blanket claim that every current Airalo Japan local package should be marketed as “5G.” If the package you are buying explicitly lists 5G, follow the package details.
How fast is Airalo in Japan?
Project Torii does not publish a single Mbps figure because real-world performance varies with the connected network, location, time of day, congestion, buildings, underground environments, device, supported bands, and roaming configuration.
We also do not take a KDDI or SoftBank domestic speed test and present it as an Airalo speed test. The quality of the underlying network is relevant evidence, but it is not the same thing as measured Airalo performance.
9. What About the Shinkansen and Rural Japan?
Airalo can be used across major tourist destinations and on intercity trips in Japan, but no eSIM can guarantee consistently fast service throughout every Shinkansen journey.
At high speed, your phone repeatedly hands off between cell sites. Tunnels, mountainous sections, congestion, handovers, and the train environment itself can all cause temporary slowdowns or dropouts. This is not unique to Airalo.
Project Torii Local Tip
Do not reduce your eSIM data allowance just because the Shinkansen offers Wi-Fi. Maps, hotel details, booking confirmations, translation tools, and train information are important enough that having your own mobile connection is the safer baseline.
If your trip includes a lot of rural or mountainous travel, also read the Network Guide.
10. Can You Use Hotspot / Tethering?
Yes—and this is one of Airalo’s more useful advantages.
Airalo’s unlimited Fair Use Policy explicitly allows personal hotspot use. Airalo states that it does not impose a separate limit on the amount of tethered data or the number of devices you connect.
laptop
tablet
a travel companion’s phone
a child’s device
But hotspot use shares the same high-speed allowance
Tethered traffic still counts toward the same daily high-speed allowance. A laptop running OS updates, cloud sync, large downloads, or video streaming can burn through that allowance quickly.
So “no separate hotspot cap” does not mean “unlimited full-speed tethering.”
Even so, the lack of a separate small hotspot allowance is a meaningful advantage for travelers who expect to tether. It is why Project Torii’s pillar guide points heavy laptop-tethering users toward Airalo.
→ Compare eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi in Japan
11. Can You Make Calls or Send SMS?
Japan local plans are primarily data-only
The current Japan local offering is designed around mobile data, not a Japanese phone number or standard cellular calling and SMS. Check the plan type before purchase.
With a data connection, internet-based apps such as WhatsApp, LINE, FaceTime, Signal, and Messenger continue to work.
Some Airalo products do include calls and texts
Airalo as a whole is not exclusively data-only. Some packages, including certain global options, can include calls and texts.
That does not mean a Japan local eSIM gives you a Japanese 090 or 080 number. If you need to place ordinary phone calls to Japanese hotels, restaurants, or other businesses, make sure you have a separate calling solution.
12. Who Airalo Is — and Isn’t — Best For
Airalo is a good fit if you…
Want several plan sizes to choose from
You can compare fixed-data and unlimited plans across different trip lengths and usage levels.
Expect to tether a laptop or tablet
Unlimited plans support personal hotspot use without a separate Airalo-imposed tethering allowance.
Are new to travel eSIMs
Airalo’s app handles purchase, installation, management, and eligible top-ups in one place.
Travel internationally beyond Japan
Local, regional, and global options let you stay within the same service for future trips.
Want a safety net if you underestimate your data
Eligible eSIMs can be topped up in the Airalo app.
→ See who should choose an Asia Regional or Global eSIM
Airalo may not be the best fit if you…
Specifically want NTT Docomo access
The current Japan Airalo listing centers on KDDI and SoftBank. If Docomo access is a purchase requirement, compare Ubigi.
Need a Japanese phone number
Do not choose the Japan local data plan expecting a Japanese number.
Want the largest daily high-speed allowance on an unlimited plan
Saily currently advertises 5 GB per 24 hours, compared with Airalo’s default 3 GB per 24 hours.
Care most about price per GB
Nomad can be cheaper at some data allowances.
Prefer one obvious plan with minimal choice
Airalo’s local / regional / global and fixed / unlimited options can feel like too much choice.
13. Project Torii Verdict
Travel Match: 🟢 Strong Choice
Airalo is the flexible all-rounder in Project Torii’s Japan eSIM lineup.
Some competitors have a clearer coverage advantage. Some can be cheaper. Some offer a larger daily high-speed allowance on unlimited plans. Saily has more distinctive security features.
Airalo still earns a Strong Choice rating because it combines relatively few major weaknesses with a broad range of options.
fixed-data plans
unlimited plans
KDDI + SoftBank
top-ups on eligible packages
strong hotspot flexibility
local / regional / global options
a service you can keep using for future international trips
In one sentence: Airalo is a balanced, flexible eSIM that is particularly strong for travelers who want more plan choice or expect to tether other devices.
Project Torii’s five-provider shorthand
| Your priority | Start by comparing |
|---|---|
| First Japan trip and you want the simplest recommendation | Ubigi |
| Price and data allowance balance | Nomad |
| More plan choice + hotspot use | Airalo |
| You do not want to think about remaining data | Holafly |
| You also want security features | Saily |
Airalo’s value in this lineup is not one killer feature. It is the breadth of useful options inside one service.

More Detailed Tips and Post-Purchase Questions
If you have read this far, you already have enough information to decide whether Airalo belongs on your shortlist. The remaining sections cover installation, top-ups, regional and global plans, eSIM reuse, troubleshooting, and refunds.
14. Can You Install Airalo Before Arriving in Japan?
Yes. You can buy an Airalo eSIM before your trip.
Buying the eSIM does not by itself necessarily start the validity period. Activation rules can vary by eSIM. Some packages begin when they first connect to a supported destination network, while other products may use different activation conditions, so check the activation policy for the package you purchased.
Once you have confirmed the activation policy, Project Torii generally recommends installing the eSIM over a stable Wi-Fi connection before departure. That is easier than dealing with QR codes, Wi-Fi, APN settings, and phone menus for the first time after landing in Japan.
15. What Happens If You Run Out of Data?
If your eSIM supports top-ups, you can buy an additional package through the Airalo app. Airalo’s Help Center directs users to My eSIMs → the relevant eSIM → Top Up.
That means you do not have to predict perfectly whether you will need 10 GB or 20 GB before your trip.
Not every eSIM necessarily offers a top-up option, so check whether Top Up appears for your package. Also, unused data does not simply remain available forever after the validity period ends.
16. Who Should Choose an Asia Regional or Global eSIM?
This is where Airalo’s broader ecosystem becomes useful.
Airalo is not just a Japan local eSIM provider. Depending on your itinerary, you can choose local, regional, or global coverage.
Japan only → start with Local
If your entire trip is within Japan—Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hokkaido, Okinawa, or elsewhere—a Japan local plan is usually the simplest place to start.
Japan + several Asian countries → compare Regional
For an itinerary such as U.S. → Japan → South Korea → Taiwan → U.S., an Asia regional plan may reduce the need to install a new eSIM every time you cross a border.
Regional does not automatically mean cheaper. If most of your trip is in Japan, a Japan local plan plus a separate local plan for another country can still cost less. Compare the included destinations, data allowance, and price.
Several world regions → compare Global
If your trip spans North America, Europe, and Asia, a global package may be more convenient. Some global packages include data only, while others can include calls and texts. Coverage and plan type vary by package.
Airalo’s value can extend beyond this Japan trip
The broader appeal is that you can keep using the same provider on future trips: Japan local this time, Thailand local next time, Europe regional later, and a global package for a multi-continent itinerary.
Frequent international travelers are more likely to benefit from this convenience than someone taking a single Japan-only trip.
17. Can You Reuse the Same Airalo eSIM?
Sometimes.
Airalo says you can reuse an existing eSIM when it has a top-up package option and the eSIM is still installed on your device.
Do not casually delete an Airalo eSIM after your trip if you may want to use it again. Airalo warns that deleted eSIMs generally cannot simply be reinstalled.
This also does not mean one Japan local eSIM profile automatically works for every Airalo destination. A different destination or product may require a new eSIM.
18. What If Airalo Does Not Connect in Japan?
If Airalo does not connect after you arrive, do not start by deleting the eSIM.
confirm the Airalo line is switched on
make sure Airalo is selected for mobile data
check data roaming against the package instructions
check the APN
toggle Airplane Mode on and off
restart the phone
check network selection
For APN and roaming settings, prioritize the installation and additional-information instructions attached to your specific eSIM in the Airalo app rather than an old setting you found elsewhere online.
19. Important Settings for iPhone Users
In most cases, select the Airalo eSIM under Cellular / Mobile Data for your data connection.
If your primary SIM does not include international roaming, also check its settings to reduce the risk of accidental roaming charges.
For the Airalo line itself, follow the data-roaming instructions for your specific package. Do not memorize a blanket rule such as “Airalo always requires Data Roaming ON”—package-specific instructions are safer.
Menu names can vary slightly by iOS version, including Cellular, Mobile Data, SIMs, and Cellular Data.
20. Refund Policy
Airalo does not operate a simple “full cash refund for any reason within 30 days” policy.
Airalo’s current Terms provide a 14-day legal right of withdrawal, but that right ends when the eSIM is activated. For an activated service that cannot be used because of an Airalo error or because Airalo retires the service, the Terms require the refund request to be submitted within 30 days of the issue, Airalo to have been unable to restore access within 10 days of receiving the request, and the customer to have cooperated with troubleshooting.
Refund requests can be submitted through the Airalo account when the refund button is available or through support. When a refund is due, the current Terms allow the customer to choose Airmoney or credit back to the original payment method. If part of the service has already been consumed, only the unused portion is refundable.
Do not assume that cancelling your trip, buying the wrong package, or changing your mind automatically guarantees a refund after activation. Before buying, double-check the destination, data allowance, validity period, fixed vs unlimited plan, and plan type.
21. FAQ
Does Airalo work in Japan?
Yes. Airalo sells eSIM packages for Japan.
Which networks does Airalo use in Japan?
Airalo’s current official Japan information lists KDDI and SoftBank.
Does Airalo use Docomo?
The current Japan listing centers on KDDI and SoftBank. If NTT Docomo access matters to you, compare Ubigi.
Does Airalo have 5G in Japan?
Airalo offers 5G-capable eSIMs in some destinations, but not every package is necessarily 5G-enabled. Project Torii does not make a blanket 5G claim for Japan local plans; check the package details before purchase.
Is Airalo Unlimited truly unlimited?
There is no fixed total data cap, but Airalo’s default FUP gives 3 GB of high-speed data per 24 hours before speeds are reduced to up to 1 Mbps. A package-specific threshold takes precedence if listed.
When does the high-speed allowance reset?
Under the default FUP, the allowance resets every 24 hours from the time the eSIM is activated.
Can I use hotspot?
Yes. Airalo’s unlimited FUP allows personal hotspot use and does not impose a separate tethering-data or device-count cap. Tethered data still uses the same daily high-speed allowance.
Do I get a Japanese phone number?
Do not choose the Japan local data plan expecting a Japanese phone number. Check the plan type before purchase.
Can I use WhatsApp or LINE?
Yes. They work over the eSIM’s data connection.
Can I call Japanese hotels or restaurants normally?
Not through the Japan local data connection alone. If you need ordinary phone calls, arrange a separate calling solution.

Project Torii Editorial Note
Editorial Principle
We also keep evidence about the underlying Japanese network separate from claims about Airalo’s own measured performance.
Project Torii does not recommend an eSIM simply because it pays a higher affiliate commission. We separate official product information, independent network evidence, local experience, practical limitations, and price wherever possible.
Trust over commissions.
