Holafly eSIM Japan Review: Unlimited Data, Networks, Hotspot Limits, and Drawbacks
Holafly is one of the travel eSIM providers best known for unlimited data.
Its Japan plans are built around unlimited data as well. Instead of choosing between 1GB, 5GB, or 10GB, you mainly decide how many days you need coverage for.
Holafly’s biggest advantage is not the lowest price or the widest network access. It is the freedom from having to keep checking how many gigabytes you have left.
There are important caveats. Unlimited does not mean full speed is guaranteed at all times. Holafly’s service can be subject to the local network provider’s Fair Use Policy (FUP), and while data use on your phone is unlimited, hotspot sharing on the Japan plan is limited to 1GB per day.
In short, Holafly is very easy to understand if you do not want to think about data allowances on your phone. If you expect to tether a laptop heavily, however, an option such as Airalo may suit you better.

Project Torii Quick Verdict
Travel Match: 🟡 Good for the Right Traveler — especially for unlimited-first travelers
Holafly is one of the easiest Japan eSIMs to understand if you simply do not want to think about how much data you have left.
Its Japan offering centers on unlimited data, with the plan length matched to the number of days you need.
Holafly is particularly easy to recommend if you:
use Google Maps and translation apps frequently
watch Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube while traveling
do not want to rely heavily on hotel Wi-Fi
do not want to keep checking your remaining data
find choosing between 5GB, 10GB, and 20GB unnecessarily complicated
use a lot of data directly on your smartphone
want to match your eSIM closely to the length of your trip
Holafly’s official Japan page lists KDDI and SoftBank as its networks and states that 5G is available where supported.
Main advantages
Unlimited data on the Japan plan
Choose a trip duration from 1 to 90 days
Access to KDDI / SoftBank
5G where available
Very little need to manage your remaining data allowance
No need to plan around top-ups simply because you chose too little data
24/7 customer support
Can be installed before your trip
Plans available for many destinations beyond Japan
Main disadvantages
Can cost more than a fixed-data plan
Unlimited plans are still subject to Fair Use Policy rules
No guaranteed fixed daily high-speed allowance
Hotspot sharing in Japan is limited to 1GB per day
No Japanese phone number
No conventional voice calls or SMS
Travelers who specifically value NTT Docomo access should also compare Ubigi
Unlimited data may be unnecessary for light-data users
Holafly is therefore not only for travelers who know they will use huge amounts of data. It also works well for people who simply do not know how much they will use and would rather not think about it.
2. Holafly at a Glance
| Feature | Holafly Japan |
|---|---|
| Type | Travel eSIM |
| Japan eSIM | Yes |
| Data | Unlimited |
| Plan length | 1–90 days |
| Networks in Japan | KDDI / SoftBank |
| 5G | Where available |
| Fair Use Policy | Yes |
| Guaranteed fixed high-speed allowance | No |
| Hotspot / tethering | Yes |
| Hotspot allowance in Japan | 1GB / day |
| Japanese phone number | No |
| Conventional voice calls | No |
| SMS | No |
| WhatsApp / LINE etc. | Yes, over data |
| Customer support | 24/7 |
| Always On | 1GB backup data / 30 days (current FAQ: 12-month access term) |
| Asia regional eSIM | Yes |
Always On is not part of the data allowance of your Japan Unlimited plan. It is a separate backup-data benefit tied to the Holafly eSIM. It does not mean your unlimited plan receives an extra 1GB every month. See Section 20 for the details.
Holafly’s basic proposition is simple:
Instead of asking, “How many GB do I need?”, you mainly ask, “How many days do I need?”
3. Holafly Japan Pricing
Holafly lets you choose the duration of your unlimited-data plan to match your trip. The following representative prices were still shown on Holafly’s official Japan page when this article was rechecked on August 26, 2026.
| Duration | Reference price |
|---|---|
| 3 days | US$11.90 |
| 5 days | US$20.50 |
| 7 days | US$27.50 |
| 10 days | US$36.50 |
| 15 days | US$50.50 |
| 30 days | US$73.90 |
Plans can be configured for trips from 1 to 90 days. This makes it easier to avoid buying a 15-day package for a 10-day trip simply because the provider only sells fixed validity periods.
The trade-off is price. If you are a light-data user, a fixed-data plan from Airalo, Nomad, Ubigi, or another provider may cost less.
The best way to think about Holafly is not as an eSIM designed to minimize your cost per GB, but as one that lets you pay for the convenience of not managing a data allowance.
Prices, promotions, and displayed currencies can change. Always check the final checkout price before buying.
4. Which Plan Should You Choose?
With Holafly, this question is much simpler than it is with most providers.
Choose the number of days that matches your trip.
That is essentially the plan-selection process. For context, Project Torii uses the following rough planning figures for typical Japan trips:
| Trip length | Typical planning allowance |
|---|---|
| 5 days | Around 3GB |
| 7 days | Around 5GB |
| 10 days | 5–10GB |
| 14 days | Around 10GB |
| 21 days | 10–20GB |
→ How much data do you need for Japan?
Many ordinary travelers can get by perfectly well with a fixed-data plan. Holafly makes more sense when you do not want to calculate usage, expect to use plenty of social media or video, rely heavily on Maps and translation, do not want to depend on hotel Wi-Fi, or simply do not want to think about a “2GB remaining” warning during your trip.
The more useful question with Holafly is therefore not “How many GB should I buy?” but “Is avoiding data management worth paying for unlimited data?”
5. Is Unlimited Data Really Unlimited?
Holafly’s Japan eSIM is sold as unlimited data. But unlimited does not mean unlimited maximum-speed data under every possible condition.
Holafly’s terms state that unlimited plans do not have a fixed data cap, while also allowing local network providers to apply Fair Use Policy measures. Excessive use or activity that affects network performance may therefore lead to temporary restrictions on speed or data usage. Holafly’s Japan page says any FUP-related speed reduction is temporary and applied for no more than one day.
Holafly’s Japan information also describes FUP-related restrictions as temporary rather than a permanent exhaustion of a fixed allowance.
There is no published “X GB of high-speed data per day” guarantee
This is an important distinction from providers that publish a specific daily high-speed allowance. Holafly does not guarantee a fixed figure such as “5GB per day at full speed” for its Japan Unlimited plan.
Project Torii therefore does not convert Holafly Unlimited into an estimated “effective X GB per day.” The accurate interpretation is simpler: there is no fixed total data allowance to run out of, but unusually heavy use can still trigger temporary FUP restrictions.
6. Holafly’s Biggest Strength — No Need to Think About GB
With a fixed-data eSIM, travelers often end up asking: Will 5GB be enough? Do I need 10GB? What if I watch video? How much will Maps use? Can I save data by relying on hotel Wi-Fi?
Holafly removes much of that calculation.
It also works for travelers who simply cannot predict their usage
First-time visitors to Japan often have no realistic way to know in advance how heavily they will use Maps, Google Translate, train apps, social media uploads, or hotel Wi-Fi. Unlimited data removes much of that uncertainty.
You pay for that simplicity
If 5GB would have been enough, an unlimited plan may cost more than necessary. Holafly is therefore better understood as a product that reduces data-management friction, not one designed to minimize the price of every gigabyte.
7. Which Networks Does Holafly Use in Japan?
Holafly’s official Japan page lists KDDI and SoftBank.
In Project Torii’s traveler-focused network guide, we broadly characterize the major Japanese networks as follows: NTT Docomo for coverage, KDDI / au for reliability and consistency, and SoftBank for strong urban download performance.
→ Docomo vs au vs SoftBank in Japan
Holafly therefore has the same headline KDDI + SoftBank combination as Airalo. For travelers spending most of their time in major cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Yokohama, and Nagoya, it is a practical network combination to consider.
However, your phone does not combine KDDI and SoftBank simultaneously, and using Holafly does not guarantee the same speeds or network priority as a direct subscriber to either Japanese carrier.
What if rural coverage matters more?
If your itinerary places unusual emphasis on rural or mountainous areas, it is also worth comparing an eSIM such as Ubigi, which offers access to NTT Docomo in Japan.
→ Compare Ubigi vs Holafly for Japan
8. Speed, 4G / 5G, and Connection Quality
Holafly’s official Japan page states that its plan can connect to 5G where available, as well as 4G and LTE.
That does not mean Holafly guarantees 5G everywhere in Japan. Actual 5G availability depends on location, network, device compatibility, supported bands, and other conditions.
How fast is it in Mbps?
Project Torii does not publish a single fixed Mbps figure for Holafly. Real-world speed can vary with the underlying network, location, time of day, congestion, buildings, underground environments, device, supported bands, roaming configuration, and Fair Use Policy.
We also do not treat domestic speed-test results for KDDI or SoftBank as if they automatically represent the experience of a Holafly roaming user.
9. What About the Shinkansen and Rural Japan?
There is no evidence that Holafly is uniquely strong on the Shinkansen. High-speed rail requires frequent handovers between cell sites, and tunnels, mountainous terrain, congestion, handovers, and the train environment itself can all cause temporary instability. This is not specific to Holafly.
Project Torii Local Tip
Do not assume onboard Shinkansen Wi-Fi makes mobile data unimportant. Maps, hotel details, booking confirmations, translation, and train information are all easier to rely on when you have your own working mobile connection.
10. Can You Use Hotspot / Tethering?
Yes — but this is one of the most important limitations to understand before buying Holafly for Japan.
Your smartphone can use unlimited data, but Holafly limits hotspot sharing on the Japan plan to 1GB per day. A 7-day plan therefore provides up to 7GB of shareable data in total, subject to the daily 1GB limit. You cannot save unused allowance from one day and combine it into a larger allowance on a later day.
You can use that hotspot allowance for devices such as:
a laptop
a tablet
a travel companion’s phone
a child’s device
Unlimited on your phone does not mean unlimited hotspot data
If almost all of your usage is directly on your smartphone, the hotspot cap may barely matter. If you plan to work extensively from a laptop, sync large files to the cloud, stream video on a computer, or share a connection heavily with other travelers, 1GB per day may be restrictive.
→ Compare Airalo vs Holafly for Japan
Airalo allows Personal Hotspot use on its unlimited offering without a separate small hotspot allowance imposed by Airalo itself.
Unlimited smartphone data is the priority → Holafly Heavy laptop tethering also matters → Airalo
→ Compare eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi in Japan
11. Calls and SMS
Holafly Japan is data-only. It does not provide a Japanese phone number, conventional cellular voice calling, or SMS.
Internet-based messaging and calling apps such as WhatsApp, LINE, FaceTime, Signal, and Messenger can still work over your data connection.
If you need to place a conventional phone call to a hotel, restaurant, or other Japanese number, you will need another way to make standard phone calls.
12. Who Holafly Is — and Isn’t — Best For
Holafly is a good fit if you:
Do not want to think about remaining data
This is the clearest use case. Holafly is easy to understand if you do not want to check how many gigabytes you have left during your trip.
Use a lot of data directly on your smartphone
Frequent social media, video, Maps, and translation use makes the unlimited model more valuable.
Cannot predict how much data you will need
First-time visitors often have no reliable way to estimate their real-world usage. Holafly removes the need to choose a fixed allowance.
Want the plan length to match your trip
The 1–90 day structure makes it easy to buy coverage that closely follows your itinerary.
Do not want to depend on hotel Wi-Fi
Travelers who prefer to use their own mobile connection for most day-to-day tasks are a natural fit.
Holafly may not be the best fit if you:
Use very little data
If around 5GB is enough, a fixed-data plan may be cheaper.
Need heavy laptop tethering
Hotspot sharing is limited to 1GB per day in Japan. Compare Airalo if PC use is a major part of your trip.
Want a clearly defined high-speed allowance
Holafly does not publish a guaranteed fixed daily high-speed threshold for the Japan Unlimited plan. A provider with an explicitly stated daily allowance may be easier to evaluate if that number matters to you.
Specifically prioritize NTT Docomo access
Holafly’s listed Japan networks are KDDI and SoftBank. Compare Ubigi if Docomo access is a priority.
Need a Japanese phone number
Holafly Japan is data-only.
13. Project Torii Verdict
Travel Match: 🟡 Good for the Right Traveler — especially for unlimited-first travelers
Among the five providers in Project Torii’s core Japan eSIM comparison, Holafly has one of the clearest roles.
It is the option for travelers who do not want to think about remaining data.
Nomad can be attractive for price per GB. Ubigi is a strong option when NTT Docomo access matters. Saily stands out for its security features. Airalo offers broad plan choice and more flexible hotspot use. Holafly’s clearest advantage is unlimited smartphone data without the need to manage a fixed allowance.
| Traveler priority | eSIM to compare first |
|---|---|
| A straightforward choice for a first Japan trip | Ubigi |
| Price / data balance | Nomad |
| More plan choice and stronger hotspot flexibility | Airalo |
| No need to think about remaining data | Holafly |
| Security features | Saily |
In one sentence, Holafly is an eSIM for travelers who would rather choose the number of days they need and stop thinking about how many gigabytes remain on their phone.
Just remember: unlimited smartphone data and unlimited hotspot data are not the same thing.

More Detailed Tips and Post-Purchase Questions
If you have read this far, you already have most of the information needed to decide whether Holafly belongs on your shortlist. The sections below cover installation, activation, regional plans, reuse, troubleshooting, Always On, and refunds.
14. Can You Install Holafly Before Arriving in Japan?
Yes. Holafly allows you to install the eSIM before your trip. Installing the Japan eSIM does not by itself start the purchased trip duration; the plan begins when you arrive at the destination, turn on the eSIM, and connect to a supported local network.
For that reason, Project Torii generally recommends installing it in advance while you have a stable Wi-Fi connection.
15. Can You Run Out of Data?
The Japan plan is unlimited, so it does not work like a fixed 10GB package that stops because you have consumed the entire allowance. Your plan does, however, have a fixed validity period, and FUP-related temporary speed restrictions can still apply.
With Holafly, the more useful thing to watch is the number of days remaining rather than the number of gigabytes remaining.
16. When Does the Asia eSIM Make Sense?
If Japan is your only destination, the Japan eSIM is the simplest option. If one trip includes Japan plus destinations such as South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, or Thailand, a Holafly regional Asia eSIM may also be worth comparing.
A regional plan is not automatically cheaper. If most of your trip is in Japan, separate local plans can sometimes make more sense. Compare coverage, validity, and price for your actual itinerary.
17. Can You Reuse the Same Holafly eSIM?
Do not casually delete the eSIM profile after your trip. Holafly ties Always On to the eSIM installed on the original device, and deleting it permanently removes that benefit for that eSIM.
The profile can remain on your device after the paid trip-data period ends. That does not mean a Japan plan automatically becomes a plan for another destination; a new eSIM or plan may still be required for a different trip.
18. What If Holafly Does Not Connect in Japan?
If you arrive in Japan and cannot connect, do not start by deleting the eSIM.
First check:
the Holafly eSIM line is turned on
Holafly is selected for Mobile Data
Data Roaming is enabled for the Holafly line
Airplane Mode has been toggled on and off
the phone has been restarted
Network Selection settings
the APN and installation instructions
Holafly requires Data Roaming to be enabled for the travel eSIM. If those checks do not solve the problem, contact Holafly’s 24/7 customer support.
19. Important iPhone Settings
On iPhone, select Holafly as the line used for Cellular Data / Mobile Data and enable Data Roaming for the Holafly line.
If your normal SIM does not include international roaming, also review its settings to avoid unintended carrier charges. Holafly notes that a physical SIM and eSIM can remain active at the same time, but your home carrier may charge roaming fees for calls or SMS made or received through your primary line.
20. What Is Always On?
Always On is Holafly’s separate backup-data benefit. For short-trip eSIMs purchased on or after February 16, 2026, it becomes available once the eSIM is installed and provides 1GB of backup data per 30-day cycle at no additional charge.
The 30-day cycle is based on the eSIM installation date rather than the calendar month. Unused data does not roll over; the allowance resets to 1GB at the start of each new cycle.
To keep using Always On, the Holafly eSIM must remain installed on the original device, turned on, and have Data Roaming enabled. Deleting the eSIM permanently removes the benefit for that eSIM. Holafly also states that Always On is available only in its supported destinations, hotspot sharing is not available with the 1GB backup allowance, and access is valid for 12 months under the current FAQ terms.
Think of it as a safety net for light essentials such as checking Maps, sending a message, viewing hotel or booking information, or buying your next data plan.
Always On is not an extra 1GB added to your Japan Unlimited plan, and its availability and performance remain subject to its own coverage and network conditions.
21. Refund Policy
Holafly accepts refund requests for up to six months from the purchase date, but the outcome depends on why you are requesting the refund and whether the eSIM has already been activated or used.
For a trip cancellation or a plan you no longer need, a full refund generally requires purchase directly from Holafly, no activation, and a request within six months.
Incompatible or SIM-locked devices and connection problems have their own conditions. For connection issues caused by Holafly or the destination network, a full or partial refund may be available depending on usage. Holafly asks customers to contact support while the problem is occurring and states that a refund cannot be guaranteed if the issue is first reported only after the trip.
In other words, “refund requests are accepted for up to six months” does not mean every used eSIM can be refunded in full for any reason.

Project Torii Editorial Note
Editorial Principle
Prices, networks, FUP rules, hotspot allowances, Always On conditions, and plan structures can change. Project Torii does not treat “unlimited data” as synonymous with guaranteed unlimited high-speed data, and we distinguish the performance of the underlying Japanese carrier from the real-world performance of a roaming eSIM.
Project Torii does not recommend an eSIM simply because it pays a higher affiliate commission. We separate official product information, independent network evidence, local experience, practical limitations, and price wherever possible.
Trust over commissions.
