Nomad eSIM Japan Review: Prices, Networks, Unlimited Data, 5G and Downsides
If you’re comparing eSIMs for a trip to Japan, Nomad is likely to stand out for its balance of price and data allowance.
Nomad’s current Japan page lists KDDI au and SoftBank as its local networks, with 4G/5G connectivity and tethering support. Fixed-data plans range from 1GB to 50GB, and Unlimited plans are also available.
That makes Nomad a strong option on paper – but there are several details worth understanding before you buy.
The Japan plans reviewed here are primarily data-only, so you should not assume you will receive a Japanese phone number or standard SMS service.
Unlimited does not mean unlimited full-speed data.
Japan Unlimited currently provides 2GB of high-speed data per 24-hour window from activation, then throttles to 512kbps until the next reset.
Add-on availability and timing depend on the specific plan.
Real-world performance varies by location, congestion, device and roaming configuration.
This review separates Nomad’s official product information, independent Japanese mobile-network evidence and practical considerations for travel in Japan so you can decide whether Nomad actually fits your trip.

Project Torii Quick Verdict
Travel Match: 🟢 Strong Choice
Nomad is especially worth considering if you:
Are taking a one- to two-week trip to Japan
Care about value per GB
May need 10GB or more
Use social media regularly
Will spend much of your trip in major cities and common tourist areas
May need to tether another device
Nomad’s current Japan product page lists KDDI au and SoftBank as its local networks and advertises 4G/5G connectivity. Because Nomad can use different underlying providers and plan configurations, always confirm the Network and Plan Details shown for the exact plan at checkout.
Independent network evidence points to different strengths:
au → Reliability / Consistency
SoftBank → Download Speed / Strong 5G Availability
→ Docomo vs au vs SoftBank in Japan
Nomad does not combine both networks simultaneously. Your phone connects to an available supported network, and actual performance can vary with location, time of day, congestion, device, network selection and roaming/routing configuration.
If your itinerary is mainly Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, you probably do not need to overthink the network name. Price, data allowance, Unlimited conditions and ease of use may matter just as much.
Nomad’s Main Strengths
KDDI au / SoftBank listed for Japan
4G/5G support
Competitive fixed-data pricing
1GB to 50GB fixed-data options
Unlimited plans available
Tethering / hotspot supported
Can be installed before departure
Add-ons available on eligible plans
Nomad’s Main Limitations
Japan plans reviewed here should be treated as data-only unless the exact Plan Details say otherwise
Unlimited is capped at 2GB of high-speed data per 24-hour window, then 512kbps
Add-on availability and purchase timing vary by plan
Unlimited plans do not support add-on data/days under the current plan details
Network availability can vary by the exact plan/provider configuration
If you want a good balance of price and data allowance for Maps, translation, messaging and social media in Japan, Nomad is easy to shortlist.

Prices, sales and plan configurations can change. Always verify the exact plan, network and price immediately before purchase.
4. Which Nomad Plan Should You Choose?
How much data you need depends on trip length and how much you use social media, video and tethering. Project Torii uses the following practical planning baseline for a typical traveler.
| Trip length in Japan | Typical planning baseline |
|---|---|
| 5 days | About 3GB |
| 7 days | About 5GB |
| 10 days | 5-10GB |
| 14 days | About 10GB |
| 21 days | 10-20GB |
Applied to Nomad, a simple starting point is:
Short trip / light use → 3GB or 5GB
Typical one- to two-week trip → 10GB
Heavy social media or a longer trip → 20GB
Heavy video or tethering → 50GB or Unlimited
These are planning estimates, not hard limits. Hotel Wi-Fi can reduce mobile-data needs, while TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube and laptop tethering can increase them quickly.
→ How much data do you need for Japan?
5. Is Unlimited Really Unlimited?
Nomad sells Unlimited plans for Japan, but Unlimited does not mean unlimited full-speed data.
For the current Japan Unlimited plan, the key rule is:
2GB of high-speed data per 24-hour window
After 2GB, speed is throttled to 512kbps
The high-speed allowance resets every 24 hours from the time the plan is activated
This is an activation-based 24-hour window – not necessarily a midnight-to-midnight calendar day. For example, if your plan activates at 3:20 p.m., the next high-speed allowance resets around the next 3:20 p.m.
At 512kbps, basic messaging, Maps and light browsing may remain usable, but image-heavy social media, video streaming and large downloads can become frustrating.
Source note: Nomad’s general Unlimited Help Center describes throttled speeds on some Unlimited plans as approximately 1-2Mbps, while the current Japan Unlimited Plan Details specifically state 512kbps after the 2GB high-speed allowance. Because this review is about Japan, Project Torii uses the Japan-specific Plan Details as the controlling product condition.
Fixed 20GB / 50GB or Unlimited?
This is one of the most useful Nomad-specific comparisons. If you expect to use around 15GB total over a two-week trip, a fixed 20GB plan may be simpler. If you expect fairly steady daily use and like the reassurance of continued connectivity after the high-speed allowance, Unlimited may be attractive.
The key question is not simply ‘Do I want unlimited data?’ It is: ‘Will 2GB of high-speed data per activation-based 24-hour window fit the way I travel?’
Refund note: Nomad’s official refund guidance is not fully consistent for Unlimited plans. Its general Refund Policy states that Unlimited plans are non-refundable, while a separate Help Center article indicates that unused Unlimited plans may still be reviewed for refund eligibility. The safest assumption is therefore that an Unlimited plan is non-refundable; do not rely on an unused-plan exception when purchasing, and check the exact Plan Details or confirm with Nomad Support if refund eligibility matters to you.
6. Japan Networks | KDDI au + SoftBank
Nomad’s current Japan product page lists KDDI au and SoftBank as the networks for Japan.
Project Torii summarizes their current independent network strengths as:
KDDI au → Reliability / Consistency
SoftBank → Download Speed / Strong 5G Availability
In Opensignal’s April 2026 Japan report, au won Reliability Experience and Consistent Quality outright, while SoftBank won Download Speed Experience and Time on 5G outright. Project Torii therefore treats SoftBank’s city-heavy appeal as an editorial interpretation rather than an official Opensignal award category.
That makes the au + SoftBank combination attractive for many mainstream itineraries, especially city-heavy trips.
However, network availability can depend on the exact eSIM plan and underlying provider configuration. Nomad’s current country page lists both networks, but Project Torii recommends checking the Network / Plan Details shown for the exact plan you are buying rather than assuming every future Nomad Japan plan will always have identical network access.
For travelers going deep into regional or mountainous Japan, NTT Docomo’s stronger Coverage Experience is also worth understanding when comparing providers.
→ Docomo vs au vs SoftBank in Japan
7. Speed, 5G and Real-World Performance
Nomad’s current Japan offering advertises 4G/5G connectivity.
Project Torii does not give Nomad a fixed speed claim such as “Nomad averages X Mbps.” Actual travel-eSIM performance can vary with location, time of day, congestion, device, 4G/5G availability, the network you connect to and roaming/routing configuration.
For context, Opensignal’s January-March 2026 measurements reported Download Speed Experience of 60.7Mbps for au and 65.1Mbps for SoftBank.
Those figures measure the underlying Japanese mobile networks. They are not direct speed tests of Nomad users, and the distinction matters.
Project Torii therefore treats access to strong Japanese networks as a positive factor, but does not claim that “Nomad will give you X Mbps.”
8. What About Shinkansen and Regional Japan?
Nomad can be used on common tourist routes and while traveling between cities, but no eSIM or carrier can guarantee perfect service on every train or in every location.
On a Shinkansen, your phone is moving rapidly between cell sites. Tunnels, mountainous terrain, congestion and handovers can all cause temporary slowdowns or unstable connections.
For that reason, Project Torii would not claim that “Nomad is always fast on the Shinkansen.”
Regional Japan
KDDI au and SoftBank both provide broad national coverage, and au’s strong Reliability / Consistency results are a positive factor. If your itinerary includes remote mountain areas, islands or other specific rural destinations, however, check the official carrier coverage maps for those exact places.
If geographic coverage is your highest priority, it is also reasonable to compare a provider that can access NTT Docomo.
Project Torii Local Tip
Free onboard Wi-Fi is available on some Shinkansen services. We do not recommend reducing your eSIM allowance because you expect to rely on it. In real-world use, onboard Wi-Fi can be slow or unstable, particularly when trains are crowded. Download video or music over hotel Wi-Fi in advance and treat Shinkansen Wi-Fi as a useful backup rather than your primary connection.
9. Can You Tether?
Yes. Nomad supports hotspot / tethering on most eSIMs. Availability can still depend on the specific plan, device and local network, so check the exact Plan Details if tethering is essential to your trip.
You can share the connection with devices such as a laptop, tablet or another phone. Any data used by tethered devices still counts against your Nomad allowance.
Laptops can consume data unexpectedly through cloud sync, operating-system updates, video streaming and large file transfers.
→ Compare eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi in Japan
Tethering on Unlimited
The 2GB high-speed allowance is shared with all usage on the eSIM, including tethering. If you tether a laptop heavily, 2GB can disappear quickly. For that use case, the 50GB fixed plan may be worth comparing with Unlimited.
10. Does Nomad Include Calls or SMS?
The Japan plans reviewed here should be treated as data-only unless the exact Plan Details explicitly say otherwise.
That means you should not buy Nomad Japan assuming you will receive a Japanese phone number, standard voice calling or standard SMS.
Nomad does note that some of its eSIM products in some markets can include a phone number, which is why checking the exact Plan Details matters.
You can still use data-based services such as WhatsApp, LINE, FaceTime and Messenger.
On a Dual SIM phone, you can use Nomad for mobile data while keeping your home SIM active for your usual phone number or SMS. Make sure the home SIM does not use mobile data unintentionally, because roaming charges depend on your home carrier.
11. Who Is Nomad Best For – and Who Should Skip It?
Nomad Is a Good Fit If You…
Care About Value per GB
Nomad’s fixed-data pricing is competitive, especially at 10GB, 20GB and 50GB.
Are Taking a Typical One- to Two-Week Trip
The 10GB / 30-day plan is an easy starting point for many travelers.
Use Social Media Regularly
The 20GB tier gives you more breathing room without a huge jump in price.
Want a Large Fixed Allowance
The 50GB / 30-day option is useful if you prefer a fixed pool instead of a daily Unlimited threshold.
Travel Mainly in Cities and Common Tourist Areas
The current Japan offering lists KDDI au and SoftBank, both strong mainstream networks.
Want to Tether
Hotspot / tethering is supported.
Nomad May Not Be the Best Fit If You…
Need a Guaranteed Japanese Phone Number or Standard SMS
The data plans reviewed here should not be purchased on that assumption.
Want Truly Unlimited Full-Speed Data
Japan Unlimited currently throttles after 2GB of high-speed data per activation-based 24-hour window.
Use Several Gigabytes of High-Speed Data Every Day
A large fixed-data plan or another provider may fit better.
Want the Simplest Possible Top-Up System
Add-on availability depends on the plan, and eligible add-ons need to be purchased while the Base Plan is still active.
Prioritize Maximum Geographic Coverage
It is worth comparing a provider with NTT Docomo access for some regional itineraries.
12. Project Torii Verdict
Travel Match: 🟢 Strong Choice
Nomad offers a strong balance of price, data allowance, Japanese network access, 4G/5G, tethering and a choice between fixed-data and Unlimited plans.
For a typical one- to two-week trip, 10GB is a sensible place to start. If you use more social media, 20GB is attractive. If video and tethering are major parts of your trip, compare the 50GB plan with Unlimited rather than assuming Unlimited is automatically better.
The Unlimited plan’s defining rule is 2GB of high-speed data per 24-hour window from activation, then 512kbps until the next reset.
Nomad’s current Japan page lists KDDI au and SoftBank, which brings together two networks with different strengths: au for Reliability / Consistency and SoftBank for Download Speed / Urban Performance. Still, always verify the network shown for the exact plan at checkout because eSIM provider configurations can change.
Project Torii therefore sees Nomad not simply as a ‘cheap eSIM,’ but as a strong value option with a particularly useful range of fixed-data sizes.

More Details Before and After You Buy
By this point, you should have the main information you need to decide whether Nomad is right for your trip. The sections below cover the smaller questions that often come up before or after purchase.
Use the contents above to jump directly to whichever section you need.
13. Can You Install Nomad Before Flying to Japan?
Yes. Nomad recommends installing the eSIM before departure.
Installation and plan activation are separate. For the current Japan offering, the normal flow is:
Before departure: Buy Nomad → Install the eSIM while you have a stable internet connection
After arriving in Japan: Turn on the Nomad line → Turn on Data Roaming for the Nomad eSIM → Select Nomad for Cellular/Mobile Data → Connect to a supported destination network
The current Japan product page says you generally have 60 days after purchase to activate the plan. If you do not activate within that window, the plan may automatically activate and the validity period will begin.
Nomad also notes that a small number of eSIMs may require manual activation. If the installation email or Plan Details gives different instructions, follow those plan-specific instructions.
14. What Happens If You Run Out of Data?
Some Nomad fixed-data plans support add-ons.
When an add-on is supported, the additional data can be tied to the existing eSIM rather than requiring a completely new installation.
However, add-on eligibility is plan-dependent. Nomad’s current Help Center guidance says an add-on can be purchased only while the Base Plan is active; the add-on then activates automatically after the Base Plan’s data is depleted or its validity expires. The practical rule is simple: if your plan supports add-ons, buy one before the Base Plan ends rather than waiting until the plan is no longer active.
Unlimited plans currently do not support add-on data or extra days under the Unlimited plan details. If you need more time, you generally purchase another plan.
15. Can You Keep Using the Same Nomad eSIM?
Sometimes – but not in the same broad way as Ubigi.
If your current Nomad plan supports an add-on, the add-on can use the existing eSIM profile.
If you purchase a separate new plan, Nomad generally treats it as a new eSIM plan. Do not assume one Nomad profile can be kept indefinitely and reused for every future destination or plan.
A simple rule is:
Eligible add-on → existing eSIM
Separate new plan → usually a new eSIM / new plan profile
16. What If Nomad Does Not Connect in Japan?
If Nomad does not connect after you arrive, do not delete the eSIM immediately.
Start by checking:
The Nomad eSIM line is turned on
Nomad is selected for Cellular/Mobile Data
Data Roaming is turned on for the Nomad eSIM
The plan is active and has remaining data
Airplane Mode off/on
Restarting the phone
APN settings
Network selection
If automatic network selection fails, you can try a supported local network manually. Give the phone time to register after switching.
Avoid deleting an active eSIM as a first troubleshooting step. Some eSIM profiles are single-use and may not be recoverable after deletion.
17. iPhone Settings to Check
On an iPhone using Dual SIM:
Set Cellular Data / Mobile Data to the Nomad eSIM
Turn Data Roaming ON for the Nomad eSIM
Keep Data Roaming OFF on your home SIM unless you intentionally want to use your home carrier abroad
Keep Allow Cellular Data Switching OFF to reduce the risk of the phone using your home SIM for data
You can keep your home SIM active for calls or SMS if needed, but charges on that line depend on your home carrier.
18. What Is Nomad’s Refund Policy?
For standard eSIM data plans, Nomad’s current general refund policy says refund requests should be made within 30 days of purchase.
Before Installation / Activation
If the eSIM has not been installed or the plan has not been activated, it may qualify for a full refund. Nomad asks customers to confirm eligibility with support.
After Activation
Once activated, the plan is treated as used and a full refund is not guaranteed. A partial refund for unused data may be possible when usage is limited and Nomad can verify a network or technical failure.
For single-use eSIMs, deleting the eSIM before requesting a refund can prevent Nomad from refunding or reassigning it.
Unlimited Plans Need Separate Attention
Nomad’s general Refund Policy states that Unlimited plans are non-refundable.
A separate Nomad Help Center article, however, indicates that unused Unlimited plans may still be reviewed for refund eligibility.
For travelers, the safest assumption is that an Unlimited plan is non-refundable. Do not rely on an unused-plan exception when purchasing. If refund eligibility is important, check the exact Unlimited Plan Details and confirm with Nomad Support before purchase.
19. FAQ
Does Nomad support 5G in Japan?
Nomad’s current Japan offering advertises 4G/5G connectivity. Actual 5G availability depends on the exact plan, device, location and network conditions.
Which networks does Nomad use in Japan?
The current Japan product page lists KDDI au and SoftBank. Because eSIM provider configurations can change, confirm the Network / Plan Details for the exact plan you buy.
Can I make normal phone calls with Nomad Japan?
The Japan data plans reviewed here should be treated as data-only unless the exact Plan Details explicitly include voice. Data-based calls through WhatsApp, LINE, FaceTime and similar apps work over mobile data.
Can Nomad receive SMS?
Do not assume standard SMS is included on the Japan data plans reviewed here. If you need SMS on your home number, consider Dual SIM and keep your primary SIM active.
Can I tether with Nomad?
Yes. Nomad supports hotspot / tethering on most eSIMs. Availability can still depend on the specific plan, device and local network, so check the exact Plan Details if tethering is essential to your trip.
Can I install Nomad before I fly to Japan?
Yes. Install before departure, then start the plan according to the Plan Details after you arrive. The current Japan page generally gives a 60-day activation window.
Is 10GB enough for Japan?
For many typical travelers, yes. Project Torii uses about 5GB for 7 days and about 10GB for 14 days as practical planning baselines, but video, social media and tethering can increase usage quickly.
Is Nomad Unlimited really unlimited?
You remain connected, but full-speed data is not unlimited. The current Japan plan provides 2GB of high-speed data per 24-hour window from activation, then 512kbps until the next reset.
Does Nomad work on the Shinkansen?
It can, but no provider can guarantee continuous high-speed service. Tunnels, terrain, congestion and high-speed handovers can cause temporary slowdowns.
Does Nomad work in regional Japan?
It can work wherever its supported local network has service. For remote destinations, check the official carrier coverage maps for your exact itinerary.
Can I add more data after I run out?
Some fixed-data plans support add-ons. Nomad’s current guidance says eligible add-ons must be purchased while the Base Plan is still active; the add-on then starts automatically after the Base Plan’s data is depleted or its validity expires. Check and purchase the add-on before the Base Plan ends.
Can I reuse the same Nomad eSIM on my next trip?
Eligible add-ons can use the existing eSIM. A separate new plan generally means a new eSIM plan/profile, so do not assume indefinite reuse across every future trip.

Independent Network Evidence
For Japanese mobile-network comparisons, Project Torii uses Opensignal’s Japan Mobile Network Experience Report – April 2026, based on measurements collected from January 1 to March 31, 2026.
This measures the underlying Japanese mobile networks. It is not a direct benchmark of Nomad eSIM users.
Project Torii Local Experience
Comments about Shinkansen Wi-Fi and practical travel connectivity are presented as local experience, not as formal network-performance measurements. Project Torii does not use one person’s experience to declare an entire carrier or eSIM service universally better or worse.
Project Torii Editorial Note
Editorial Principle
Project Torii does not recommend an eSIM simply because an affiliate commission is available.
We try to separate Official Information / Independent Evidence / Local Experience / Real-World Practicality / Price / Limitations.
The goal is not to sell the product with the highest commission. The goal is to help travelers choose the option that best fits their trip to Japan.
If Nomad is not the right fit for a particular traveler, Project Torii should say so.
