Is Saily a Good eSIM for Japan?

Saily eSIM Japan Review: Prices, Unlimited Data, 5G, Security, and Drawbacks

If you are comparing eSIMs for a trip to Japan, Saily is a relatively new service that has quickly become a serious option.

Saily is a travel eSIM service developed by Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN.

  • Fixed-data plans from 1GB to 20GB

  • Unlimited plans

  • 3G / 4G / LTE / 5G

  • Hotspot / tethering

  • Data top-ups and Auto Top-Up

  • One reusable eSIM for multiple trips

  • Ad Blocker / Web Protection / Virtual Location

Saily also offers an optional US phone number alongside its data eSIM. It is not a Japanese local number. The underlying eSIM data plan remains data-only; voice calls and SMS require the separate Saily phone-number add-on and an eligible call or text plan for Japan. We explain the important limitations later in this review.

→ What is the Saily US Phone Number?

What makes Saily different from many travel eSIMs is that it combines mobile data with built-in security and privacy features.

  • Saily’s current Japan page lists KDDI and SoftBank as its local network partners

  • Other providers may be cheaper for some fixed-data allowances

  • Unlimited does not mean unlimited high-speed data

  • The security features add less value if you do not need them

This review separates Saily’s official product information, independent evidence about Japanese mobile networks, and practical travel considerations so you can decide whether Saily fits your trip.

1. Quick Verdict — Is Saily Good for Japan?

Project Torii Quick Verdict
Travel Match: 🟡 Good for the Right Traveler

Saily is especially worth considering if you:

  • Are visiting Japan for around one to two weeks

  • Use Maps, translation, social media, and web browsing normally

  • Want simple app-based management

  • Need hotspot / tethering

  • Value an ad blocker or web protection

  • Want to reuse the same eSIM on future trips

  • Want an Unlimited option

  • Want a second US phone number in addition to your primary number

The US phone number is an unusual extra. It is not a Japanese 090/080 number, but it can serve as a secondary US number for supported services and OTP / 2FA. Saily also offers separate call and SMS plans for Japan.

→ What is the Saily US Phone Number?

Saily’s fixed-data plans for Japan start at US$3.99 for 1GB / 7 days. Current options include 10GB / 30 days for US$17.99 and 20GB / 30 days for US$24.99, plus Unlimited plans.

Its clearest differentiator is the bundle of security and privacy tools built into the eSIM experience: Ad Blocker, Web Protection, and Virtual Location.

That makes Saily less of a “cheapest possible price per GB” product and more of an all-round travel eSIM focused on usability, Unlimited options, security, and reusability.

Saily’s current Japan page lists KDDI and SoftBank as local network partners. The exact network available can depend on the plan, location, device, and current provider configuration, so check the latest plan details before purchase.

Main drawbacks

  • No NTT docomo partner is currently listed on Saily’s Japan page

  • Unlimited has a high-speed usage threshold

  • Security extras may not matter to every traveler

4. Which Saily Plan Should You Choose?

Project Torii uses the following planning ranges for a typical traveler:

Time in JapanTypical planning range
5 daysAbout 3GB
7 daysAbout 5GB
10 days5–10GB
14 daysAbout 10GB
21 days10–20GB

Applied to Saily:

  • Short trip / light user → 3GB or 5GB

  • Typical one- to two-week trip → 10GB

  • Heavy social use or longer trip → 20GB

  • Frequent video or tethering → compare Unlimited

Your actual usage depends on behavior, not just trip length. Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube, and tethering can increase usage quickly. If you mainly use Maps, translation, search, and messaging during the day and hotel Wi-Fi at night, you may need much less.

5. Is Unlimited Really Unlimited?

Saily Unlimited does not mean unlimited high-speed data.

For the current Japan Unlimited plan:

  • Up to 5GB of unrestricted-speed data per 24 hours

  • After 5GB, data continues at up to 1Mbps

  • The high-speed allowance resets every 24 hours

In other words, your connection does not stop after 5GB; only the speed changes until the next 24-hour allowance resets.

This is important when comparing “Unlimited” plans. At the time of review, Nomad’s Japan Unlimited plan used a 2GB / 24-hour high-speed allowance followed by 512kbps, making Saily’s 5GB / 24-hour allowance comparatively generous.

Most travelers will not use 5GB every day. If you have hotel Wi-Fi and typical travel usage, a 10GB or 20GB fixed plan may still be cheaper. Choose Unlimited based on how much data you actually expect to use, not the word “Unlimited.”

6. Saily’s Biggest Differentiator: Security Features

Saily includes Ad Blocker, Web Protection, and Virtual Location.

Ad Blocker

Saily’s ad blocker uses DNS-based filtering. It can reduce ads loaded from external domains, which may reduce distractions and mobile-data use. It cannot block every ad; ads hosted on the same domain as the website may still appear.

Web Protection

Web Protection blocks malicious sites and limits online trackers through DNS-based filtering. It is not a complete antivirus product and cannot protect against every threat, such as malicious attachments or malware hosted on a trusted domain.

Virtual Location

Virtual Location routes traffic through a remote server so websites see a different apparent location. Saily currently advertises 115+ virtual locations.

Project Torii does not treat Virtual Location as identical to a dedicated VPN service such as NordVPN. If VPN capabilities or privacy policies matter to you, compare dedicated VPN services separately.

Project Torii assessment

These tools are not essential if you only need Maps and translation. But having ad blocking, malicious-site filtering, and a virtual-location feature integrated into a travel eSIM is a genuine point of differentiation.

7. Which Network Does Saily Use in Japan?

Saily’s current Japan page explicitly lists KDDI and SoftBank as local network partners for 4G/LTE and 5G service.

Those partnerships can change, and the exact network available at a given moment may depend on the plan, location, device, and current provider configuration. Check the latest plan details before purchase.

Does that mean you should avoid Saily?

No. KDDI and SoftBank both provide broad coverage across major cities and tourist routes. Travelers who specifically want NTT docomo access should compare another provider, while anyone prioritizing a particular network should recheck the plan details before purchase.

→ Docomo vs au vs SoftBank in Japan

8. Speed, 5G, and Connection Quality

Saily officially lists 3G / 4G / LTE / 5G support in Japan. Project Torii does not claim that “Saily averages X Mbps in Japan,” because real-world performance varies with the host network, location, time, congestion, device, 4G/5G availability, roaming, and routing.

Saily currently identifies KDDI and SoftBank, but Project Torii does not apply carrier-level Opensignal results directly to Saily as if they were a benchmark of Saily users. Those results describe the underlying networks, while eSIM performance can also be affected by roaming and routing.

9. Shinkansen and Rural Japan

Saily sells a Japan eSIM, but mobile connections on the Shinkansen can still fluctuate because of high speed, tunnels, mountainous sections, congestion, and handovers between cell sites. This is not unique to Saily.

What about rural Japan?

Saily currently lists KDDI and SoftBank. That supports broad coverage expectations, but it does not justify claiming rural superiority; remote performance still varies by location, terrain, congestion, device, and current network configuration.

Project Torii Local Tip
Some Shinkansen trains offer free Wi-Fi, but we would not reduce your eSIM data allowance on the assumption that train Wi-Fi will always work well. Download video and music on hotel Wi-Fi when possible, and treat onboard Wi-Fi as a useful backup rather than your primary connection.

10. Hotspot / Tethering

Yes. Saily supports hotspot / tethering, and its Japan page currently states that there is no hotspot restriction.

Data used by a connected laptop or tablet still counts against your Saily allowance. Laptops can consume data quickly through cloud sync, operating-system updates, streaming, and large downloads.

→ Compare eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi in Japan

What about Unlimited?

Hotspot can also be used with Unlimited. The 5GB / 24-hour high-speed allowance still applies, so heavy tethering shares that high-speed allowance with your phone usage.

11. Who Saily Is — and Is Not — Best For

Saily is a good fit for:

Typical one- to two-week Japan trips
The 10GB / 30-day plan fits many typical itineraries.

Travelers who value built-in security features
Ad Blocker, Web Protection, and Virtual Location are clear differentiators.

Heavy data users considering Unlimited
The 5GB / 24-hour high-speed allowance is relatively generous.

Frequent international travelers
You can add plans for new destinations to the same Saily eSIM.

People who want a second US number
The optional +1 number can be useful for supported US services, OTP / 2FA, privacy, and as a secondary number. Separate call and text plans for Japan are also available.

Travelers who want app-based management
Plans, top-ups, and features are managed in the Saily app.

→ What is the Saily US Phone Number?

Saily may not be the best fit for:

Travelers who specifically want NTT docomo access
The current Japan page lists KDDI and SoftBank, not NTT docomo.

Travelers who need a Japanese phone number
Saily’s add-on number is a US +1 number.

Travelers focused only on the lowest price
Another provider may be cheaper at a given allowance.

Travelers who do not value the security extras
Part of Saily’s differentiation may be irrelevant to you.

Anyone who needs unlimited high-speed data
Unlimited still has a 5GB / 24-hour high-speed allowance.

12. Project Torii Verdict

Travel Match: 🟡 Good for the Right Traveler

Saily offers a strong balance of price, data allowances, Unlimited, 5G, tethering, eSIM reusability, and security features.

Project Torii sees Saily as more than a budget eSIM: it is a polished travel eSIM that adds useful security and privacy tools to the basic connectivity package.

The standout features are Ad Blocker, Web Protection, and Virtual Location. Its Unlimited plan also offers up to 5GB of high-speed data per 24 hours before speeds are reduced to up to 1Mbps.

For users who need it, the optional US phone number is another unusual bonus. Separate call and text plans for Japan are available, but the number itself remains a +1 US number rather than a Japanese local number.

→ What is the Saily US Phone Number?

The main network limitation is that Saily does not currently list NTT docomo as a Japanese partner. This may matter to travelers whose itinerary or preference specifically depends on docomo; for many city-focused trips, price, plan size, Unlimited limits, and usability may matter more.

Overall, Saily is a strong option for travelers who value Unlimited flexibility, built-in security, app usability, and a reusable eSIM.

More Detailed Tips and Post-Purchase Questions

If you have reached this point, you should already have enough information to decide whether Saily belongs on your shortlist. The sections below cover setup, top-ups, phone-number details, troubleshooting, and refunds.

13. Can You Install Saily Before Arriving in Japan?

Yes. Installing it before departure is usually easier.

Installing the eSIM and starting the data plan are separate steps. A typical flow is: buy and install the eSIM before departure, then enable the Saily line and Data Roaming after arrival in Japan. The plan activates when it connects to the destination network.

Current Japan plans have a 30-day activation window. Saily states that if a plan is not manually activated within that period, it will activate automatically. There is therefore little reason to buy a plan months in advance.

14. What Happens If You Run Out of Data?

You can add data in the Saily app by selecting your eSIM, choosing Add data, selecting the destination, and purchasing another plan.

Saily also offers Auto Top-Up. When enabled, the same plan can be renewed automatically once the current data allowance is fully used. Saily notes that Auto Top-Up uses the regular price even if the original plan was purchased with credits or a discount code.

15. Can You Reuse the Same Saily eSIM?

Yes. Saily lets you add plans for new destinations to the same eSIM and currently covers 200+ destinations. You do not need to install a new eSIM profile for every trip.

16. What Is the Saily US Phone Number?

Saily offers an optional US cellular phone number beginning with +1 alongside its data eSIM. It is a US-based number, not a Japanese 090/080 number.

The short version

The core idea is a second US phone number separate from your primary number. It may be useful for privacy, services that require a US number, and supported OTP / 2FA use cases.

Saily’s Japan page also states that calls and SMS are available with minutes and text-message plans for Japan.

Can you call hotels or restaurants in Japan?

Saily’s Help Center says its phone plans support local calls only and do not support international calls. Saily’s Japan page, meanwhile, states that calls are available with a minutes plan for Japan and that both outgoing and incoming calls consume minutes.

Taken together, these official statements indicate that the Japan Call Plan is intended for local calling while you are in Japan. However, Saily does not provide a clear dialing example showing exactly how a call to a Japanese hotel, restaurant, or other domestic number is handled. We therefore recommend confirming the eligible destination and dialing format in the app before relying on the feature for an important call.

The Saily number itself remains a +1 US number. Incoming calls are supported and consume your purchased minutes. However, someone in Japan calling your Saily number through their normal carrier may be charged their carrier’s international rate for a call to the United States. Saily also states that international calls are not supported, so the service should not be treated as a way to call US or other foreign numbers from Japan using the same local-call minutes.

Is it separate from your regular US number?

Yes. Think of it as a new +1 number alongside your AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, or other primary number. Saily advertises the number from US$0.99 per month, with call/text plans sold separately from US$0.99. Identity verification is required.

Why would you want a second US number?

  • Avoid giving your primary personal number to every online service

  • Use services that require a US number

  • Separate supported OTP / 2FA use from your primary number

  • Keep a secondary number for online accounts

  • Keep the same secondary US number while traveling internationally

Saily publishes examples of services where it has tested OTP or 2FA support, including WhatsApp, Signal, Viber, Airbnb, Wise, PayPal, and Venmo. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every service.

Do calls use your data allowance?

Saily manages Data Plans and Phone Plans separately. For example, with a 10GB Data Plan plus a 100-minute Phone Plan, Maps and social media use the data allowance while eligible voice calls use the minutes package.

Both outgoing and incoming calls consume minutes. Minute consumption begins only after the other party answers and the voice channel opens; unanswered calls do not deduct minutes.

What if someone calls your Saily number?

Because the number is US-based, a caller using a Japanese mobile or landline carrier may be charged that carrier’s international rate for a call to the United States, regardless of where you are physically located.

Project Torii assessment

The Saily Phone Number is not the main reason most travelers will choose Saily, but it is an unusual bonus feature. It can be useful for travelers interested in Japan call/text plans as well as users who value a secondary US number for supported services, OTP / 2FA, or privacy. It is not a substitute for having an actual Japanese local phone number.

17. What If Saily Does Not Connect in Japan?

First check that the Saily eSIM is enabled, selected for Mobile Data, Data Roaming is enabled on the Saily line, and the plan is activated. You can also toggle Airplane Mode, restart the phone, and check APN and Network Selection settings.

Do not immediately delete the eSIM if you have a connection problem. Use the in-app guidance or Saily’s 24/7 support first.

18. Important Settings for iPhone Users

With Dual SIM, select Saily for Mobile Data and turn Data Roaming ON for the Saily line.

If you do not intend to use international data through your home SIM, leaving Data Roaming OFF on that line can reduce the risk of unintended roaming charges. You can keep the home SIM active for your number and SMS while using Saily for data.

Voice, SMS, and roaming charges on your home SIM depend on your carrier, so check its rules before traveling.

19. Refund Policy

For an unused, non-activated Data Plan, Saily allows you to request a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

Before activation

If the eSIM has not been installed or the Data Plan has not been activated, you may request a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

After activation

Once activated, the plan is considered used and a full refund is not guaranteed. Saily says a partial or full refund may still be considered if Saily-related quality issues prevented meaningful use or if more than 99% of the Data Plan remains unused.

20. FAQ

Does Saily support 5G in Japan?

Yes. Saily’s Japan page lists 3G / 4G / LTE / 5G. Actual 5G availability depends on location, device, and the local network.

Which network does Saily use in Japan?

Saily’s current Japan page lists KDDI and SoftBank as its local network partners.

Does Saily give you a Japanese phone number?

No. The optional Saily Phone Number is a +1 US number, not a Japanese 090/080 number.

Can you use the Saily US number to call a hotel or restaurant in Japan?

Saily says calls are available with a Japan minutes plan and that its phone plans are limited to local calls. However, Saily does not provide a clear dialing example for Japanese hotels, restaurants, or other domestic numbers. Check the eligible destination and dialing format in the app before relying on the feature for an important call.

What is the US Phone Number useful for?

It can serve as a secondary US number for supported services, OTP / 2FA, privacy, and other use cases.

Can Saily tether or create a hotspot?

Yes. Saily supports hotspot / tethering and its Japan page currently states no hotspot restriction.

Can I install Saily before Japan?

Yes. Installing before departure is recommended. Current plans have a 30-day activation period.

Is 10GB enough for Japan?

It can be enough for a typical traveler. Project Torii uses about 5GB for 7 days and about 10GB for 14 days as practical planning values.

Is Saily Unlimited truly unlimited?

Data continues, but high-speed data is not unlimited. The current Japan plan provides up to 5GB per 24 hours before speeds are reduced to up to 1Mbps.

Does Saily work on the Shinkansen?

It can, but high-speed travel, tunnels, mountains, congestion, and handovers can cause temporary instability.

Does Saily work in rural Japan?

Saily currently lists KDDI and SoftBank, but rural performance can still vary by location, terrain, congestion, device, and current network configuration.

Can I add more data?

Yes. You can top up in the app, and Auto Top-Up is available.

Can I reuse the eSIM on another trip?

Yes. You can add plans for new destinations to the same Saily eSIM; Saily covers 200+ destinations.

Does Virtual Location replace a VPN?

Not necessarily. Project Torii does not treat Virtual Location as identical to a dedicated VPN service. Compare dedicated VPN features and privacy policies if that matters to you.

21. Sources & Evidence

Official Product Information

For Saily product specifications, Project Torii prioritizes Saily’s official Japan destination page and Saily Help Center. The review checks Japan pricing and allowances, Unlimited / Fair Usage Policy, 5G and hotspot support, activation, top-ups and Auto Top-Up, eSIM reusability, security features, US Phone Number / calls / SMS, and refund policy.

Network and feature information was rechecked on August 26, 2026. The US-dollar prices shown in this review were captured on August 8, 2026. Prices, plans, features, and conditions can change, so readers should confirm the latest checkout details before purchasing.

Japanese Network Evidence

Project Torii uses the Opensignal Japan Mobile Network Experience Report — April 2026 when comparing Japanese mobile networks. Saily’s current Japan page lists KDDI and SoftBank, but carrier-level results are used as background evidence rather than as a direct benchmark of Saily users.

Project Torii Local Experience

Comments about Shinkansen Wi-Fi and day-to-day connectivity in Japan are treated separately as local experience. We do not generalize one person’s experience into a claim about Saily or an entire mobile network.

Project Torii Editorial Note

Editorial Principle
Project Torii does not recommend an eSIM simply because it pays a higher affiliate commission. We separate Official Information, Independent Evidence, Local Experience, Real-World Practicality, Price, and Limitations wherever possible.
For Saily in particular, network claims follow the current official Japan page: KDDI and SoftBank are now listed. We still avoid turning that product disclosure into unsupported direct speed or rural-coverage claims. The same principle applies to eye-catching extras such as the US Phone Number: we distinguish what is officially confirmed from what is only a reasonable interpretation.
The goal is not to sell the product with the highest commission. It is to help readers choose the eSIM that fits their trip to Japan — even when that means recommending a different provider.
